Mandamus Law Reference is an independent editorial publication about the writ of mandamus in United States federal and state law. It publishes explanatory articles, a reference guide and a glossary. It is operated as a publication, not as a professional practice.

What this site is not

This site is not a law firm and does not provide legal services. Nothing on it is legal advice, and reading it creates no attorney-client relationship with anyone. No article here is written for a particular reader's circumstances, and none should be relied on as a substitute for advice from a licensed attorney in the relevant jurisdiction.

The site does not accept instructions, does not act for anyone, and does not review documents. Correspondence sent through the contact form is not privileged and does not create any professional relationship.

Jurisdictional scope

The content addresses the law of the United States: federal statutes and rules, decisions of the federal courts, and the practice of individual states where identified as such. It does not address the law of any other country. Mandamus practice varies between the federal system and each of the fifty states, and between circuits within the federal system; an article that describes one jurisdiction should not be read as describing another.

Accuracy and currency

Articles state the law as understood at the date of the review shown on each page. Statutes are amended, rules are revised and decisions are issued after that date. Fee amounts, processing times and agency practice change frequently and are described here in general terms rather than as figures, precisely because a printed figure ages badly. Readers should verify any provision against its official source before relying on it; every article links to those sources where a stable official URL exists.

Articles link to primary legal sources published by courts, legislatures and agencies. Those materials are the property of their publishers and are linked for verification, not reproduced.

This site also links to 22 related websites, identified as such wherever they appear and labelled by whether each is a publication or a legal practice. Those sites are operated separately, and this publication is not responsible for their content, their accuracy or their handling of personal data. The nature of that relationship is disclosed in the editorial policy.

Intellectual property

The articles, the guide, the glossary and the diagrams on this site are original editorial work. Statutes, rules and judicial decisions quoted within them are public documents and are quoted as such, with their formal citation.
